My name is Joe and this is a story about me and Miley, my best friend. We’ve been friends since we were in diapers and we’ve grown up together. We’ve gone through everything together, from her first period to her first boyfriend, to getting her heart broken for the first time. It wasn’t easy to see her get her first boyfriend, or even her second, third, fourth, and fifth but I managed to do it. What was even more difficult for me to see was her getting her heart broken by them. It was something I didn’t like at all. Sure it was partly because no one wants to see their best friend get hurt but it was even more extreme in my case. For me, it was hard to watch because… I’m in love with her. Yeah, that’s right, I’m in love with her. I always have been and I’m pretty sure I always will be. There’s just one big problem though… She has no idea. And I can’t wait any longer to tell her and risk having to see her fall for some other guy who might possibly break her heart. So I decided I’m going to tell her how I feel, but not in the usual way. I’m going to trick her into thinking I have a date with some other girl and that I want her to be my wing woman when really, the entire date is for her. I’m hoping that after today, I’ll be out of the friend zone.
“So what’s this girl like anyway?” Miley asked, nothing bothering to look up at me. Instead, she looked uninterested as she sat on the edge of my bed picking at her nails. I stepped out of my closet, with two shirts in my hands, holding them up in front of me to see which I liked better and then turned to face Miley. She tapped her index finger against her chin and studied them both carefully. “Hmm, the plaid one. It goes great with your complexion and your eyes.” I nodded my head and returned the other shirt to the closet and then walked back over to her. “So are you gonna answer my question or what?” She asked. She was picking at her nails again. I sat down next to her and gently took her hands in mine, preventing her from picking at them and looked at her. “Why, is someone jealous?” My tone was one of which you would use when speaking to a baby. Her mouth hung wide open and she looked at me like I just slapped her in the face. “NOO! I am definitely NOT jealous. Why would you think such a thing?” I shrugged my shoulders. “I dunno. A lot of ladies want a piece of this.” I gestured to my body and winked. “I just didn’t know if you were one of those ladies.” Without saying another word, I went back to my closet and came back out a moment later with two pairs of sneakers in my hand and held them both up. “Which pair?” Her mouth was still hanging open and she was choking on her words, but managed to get them out. “Uh, the brown ones.” I chucked the other pair into the closet and put the brown shoes on my feet. I was gonna keep ignoring Miley’s question but I knew if I did that, she’d get angry and I hated to see her angry, especially on a day as important as today, so I took my place next to her once again and wrapped my arms around her. “So the girl I’m going on a date with tonight… I’ve been told she’s one of the funniest people and that she has a contagious laugh. Also, she has a killer body and an even more killer personality. She’s got a very eclectic musical taste, just like me. And most importantly, I’ve been told she has a huge heart. The only problem is, she falls too hard too fast so I’ve got to be super careful with her because I could never see someone as sweet as her get hurt. It would just kill me on the inside.” After speaking, I looked into her beautiful blue eyes and immediately felt the urge to lean in and just kiss her. I knew I couldn’t do that just yet though. If I would be fortunate enough to kiss her at all, it was going to have to wait until after I told her how I really feel.
Miley and I walked hand in hand down the streets of Sunny Los Angeles. She looked so cute in her little dress that rose WAY above her knees, but I didn’t mind it. Considering she didn’t know she was actually going on a date, I thought her outfit was very well fit for the occasion. I was planning on how to tell Miley my news that I wasn’t paying attention to what was going on around us so it came as a shock to me when I was being pulled inside a “FLOWER SHOP?” I yelled. “What?” She giggled. “You have to buy her some flowers so you can give them to her when you go to her house to pick her up. It’s the gentlemen thing to do.” Clearly, Miley wanted flowers. Even though she didn’t know this date was for her, she always dropped little hints like that when it was her who wanted something. “Okay, so since this is your idea, what type should we get her?” She tapped her chin, in thought, just as she had done before. “Well, it all depends…” She trailed off. I looked at her, very confused. “On what?” “What her personality is, of course. I mean, you told me what she was like but I didn’t get very specific details so it’s hard for me to help you out. But you just have to look around and when you come across them, the right flowers will jump out at you.” I did as Miley suggested and walked around the store, searching to find the perfect bouquet. Suddenly, just as she said, the perfect ones jumped right out at me. When I looked at them, I knew they would go perfectly with Miley’s bubbly and overly energetic personality.
After leaving the store, Miley forced me to go get a haircut so I looked clean and crisp for this date. When I asked her why she wanted me to put so much effort into one little date, which it really wasn’t, it was absolutely so much more than that, but anyway, she told me it was because “You only get one first date with someone and you want it to be absolutely perfect. It might seem dumb but she’s always going to remember the little things a guy did for her, so those are what counts.” That was reason enough for me to do all the little things she wanted me to because I wanted this date to be perfect for her. If she was happy, I was ecstatic.
I walked Miley back to her house and we were now standing on her front porch. “Promise you’ll call me and then come over as soon as the date is over. And don’t leave anything out, I want to hear every single detail!” I put my hands on my shoulders and slowly, and gently began rubbing her arms, up and down. “Calm down, Miles. I promise, you’re going to know ever little detail about this date. It’s almost going to be like you were there.” I winked and then walked away.
7:15 - Right about now, Miley thought I was heading out to go pick up my date, so that’s exactly what I did. I jumped in my Chrysler 200 convertible, that I had spent a majority of the afternoon cleaning out, just for Miley, and drove to the all too familiar location. A quick check in the mirror and a mini-pep talk through my rearview mirror both told me I was ready and I could do this. I picked up the flowers from the passenger seat and some dark chocolate, Miley’s favorite, and walked towards the door. Nervously, my hand made a fist and came in contact with the door. This was it, there’s no turning back now. Seconds later, I heard footsteps and my heart started racing. Maybe this wasn’t my smartest idea. If I turned around now, I could possibly make it to my car and get the fuck out of her neighborhood before she answered the door. Just as I was in the process of turning and about to make a run for it, the front light went on and I heard the door unlock and then open. “Joe? Is everything okay?” Damn, it was too late. I turned around and smiled a big, cheesy smile at her. “Yeah, everything’s fine. I was just, I was just stopping by one last time before my date. I wanted your approval to make sure I looked good enough to take a beautiful girl out.” She smiled at me and then pulled me in for a hug. While she was holding me, she whispered in my ear. “I think you’re the most handsome man alive, even when you’re wearing pajamas and you haven’t showered yet. Any girl would be lucky to go on a date with you.” Then she pulled away and looked at me. “Do you really mean that?” I asked, unsure if she was just saying that or if she was being sincere. She nodded her head. “Of course I do, Joseph.” I smiled and took a deep breath. This was it, my big moment. “Now you better get going, you don’t want your date to think you stood her up. So go out there and have a great time. I know you can do it Joe.” She was so sweet and encouraging, that was part of the reason I loved her so much. I nodded my head and waved goodbye to her. Then, I turned around and started walking down the steps of her house. Right before I opened the door to my car, I ran back to her front door. “What are you-” I cut her off by gently pressing my finger to her lips. “Please, just let me talk.” She nodded and I removed my finger. “Miley, we’ve gone through everything together, good and bad, we’ve been through it all. I’ve always had feelings for you but I’ve been too scared to admit it but through each experience and everything we’ve been through, from you getting boyfriends, to them breaking up with you and me having to be there to pick up the pieces they left behind, my feelings for you have gotten stronger and stronger. There’s no girl in this world that will ever come close to making me feel the way you do because… Because I’m head over heels in love with you Miley.” Her beautiful blue eyes shot wide open and she looked at me. “You’re what?” “I’m in love with you, Miley.” I repeated myself. She smiled and then put her hands on my cheeks. “I’m in love with you too, Joseph.” Hearing those words come from her mouth was the greatest gift I could ever receive in my life. “Do you really mean that, Miles?” She nodded her head and then leaned in and gently kissed me. It was my first ever kiss and I got all the feelings you heard about in movies or read about in books. When she pulled away, I leaned my forehead on hers and smiled. “Shall we get going then? Our reservations are 8:00 and it’s almost 7:30. We don’t want to be late.” Miley looked puzzled. “But what
about your date? Won’t she be a little mad that you asked her out and then just blew her off?” I gave her a devious grin and noticed her face turn red. “There was no date, was there?” I smirked and shook my head. “Not technically.” She looked at me, very puzzled. “I do have a bunch of things planned for a date tonight. They’re just not for some random girl… They’re for you.” I could tell she was processing my words cause then she looked up at me and smiled. “Alright. So are you going to ask me on this date, or what?” I smiled back at her. “Oh right!” I took her hands in mine. “Miley, will you do me the honor or being my date for this evening?” She nodded her head and I felt my heart doing cartwheels. I took her hand and lead her to my car.
The date went amazingly. First, we went to go see “The Vow” because she’d been dying to see it. Then, we went to the pizza place down the road and had some pizza. After, we went cosmic bowling and Miley kicked my ass at that, but it was okay because she gave me a kiss afterwards cause she felt bad for her being so good and me being not so good. And then, to finish it off, we went to a brand new “Make-Your-Own-Ice Cream” parlor. It seemed like Miley was having a good time and was enjoying herself, as was I. I hated that our first date was very quickly coming to an end.
We got in my car and I drove her to her house. For the entire car ride, Miley held my hand and we sang along to a CD that she had burned for me when I first got my license. When I pulled into her driveway, I knew our first date was almost over and there was still one thing I had to do. I turned off the car, unbuckled my seatbelt, and turned towards Miley; she did the same. I leaned my forehead on hers and took her hands in mine. “Miley, there’s something I want to ask you.” I could tell I sounded nervous but I tried to get past the nerves and do what I’d wanted to for so long. “Go ahead.” She smiled. I think she knew what was coming which made it a little easier. “Will you be my girlfriend?” I heard her squeal and then she started jumping up and down in her seat. I couldn’t help but giggle. “I would love to!” I leaned in and kissed her. For a brief second, I pulled away and looked in her beautiful eyes. “I love you Miley.” She stroked my cheeks with her fingers. “I love you too, Joe.” I was officially out of the friend zone.
