In my world, there hasn’t been a sunny day since I was 17. That’s around the time that I finally got up the courage to ask Meghan out. She said yes, and we began dating. At first, our relationship was picture perfect, something that everyone dreamed of having. But, as time went on, I realized that no picture is completely perfect, it has to have a flaw of some sort. And about three years into our relationship, the flaws started to show… Meghan became less perfect and sweet, and more of a bitch. She started to act more controlling and always wanted to know where I was, at all times. If I didn’t call her or text her to let her know what I was doing, the next time she saw me, she would start screaming at me. Although her words were harsh, and made me feel awful about myself, I found a way to let them just roll off my back. When she saw how her
words weren’t affecting me in the way she wanted to, she kicked it up a notch. Now, when I did something that she didn’t like, or didn’t fill her in on what I was doing every second, of every minute, of every hour, of every day, the hitting would happen. It wasn’t girly hitting; it was full on slaps in the face, punches in the stomach, and kicks in very painful places. As much as I tried to get her to stop, it was no use. The only way for her to calm down was to kick the crap out of me, run away, and then not talk to me for a few hours. By the next day, she would come crying back to me and tell me how sorry she was, that she loves me, and will never do it again. You know what the worst part of it is? That I believed her every single time. As easy as it might sound to just leave and get out of the relationship, I couldn’t do that. I loved Meghan way too much to leave her. Yeah, she had a short temper and was kind of bitchy and controlling and she did hit me, but I still love her and don’t know where I would be without her. She’s my everything.
I was in the middle of eating dinner with my mom when I felt my phone vibrating inside the pocket of my jeans and knew right away who it was. I didn’t want to be rude and leave the table but I knew that if I didn’t, then
the next time I saw Meghan, I would get a strong beating from her. “I’ll be right back.” I whispered under my breath before getting up from the table and walking outside. “Hi, baby.” I tried to sound excited, and not nervous. “Why did it take you so long to pick up?! I called four times. If you’re not willing available when I need you, why do I even stick around? I’m hot. Do you know how many guys would kill to be dating me? But instead, I’m with your ugly self.” Even though I should be used to it by now, her words still hurt. “I’m sorry. I was having dinner with my mom.” I whispered. “I don’t care if you were having dinner with the Queen of England! Your mom gets to see you every day because you’re a loser and still live with her. Now, you have 20 minutes to be at my
house or we’re done.” She ended the call right after she finished her sentence, not giving me the chance to say anything. Part of me wanted to go see her, but a bigger part of me felt guilty about leaving my mom alone. “I better get this over with now.” I thought to myself before reaching inside my pocket and pulling out my keys.
Getting to my car was a struggle, but I managed to do it. Tonight, Meghan’s giant ring made direct contact with my left cheek, which left a pretty large cut. My stomach was covered in bruises, from the last time she got angry at my, and this time. And it hurt to walk because I got kicked to the ground, and even when I was down, I was repeatedly kicked in the back, and stomach. Looking at the clock, I saw it was only 8:15 and didn’t know what to
do. Mom was at work, so I didn’t want to go home to an empty house and obviously being with Meghan right now was out of the question. I decided to just drive. My stomach started to grumble, due to me not being able to touch my dinner, so when I saw a small pizza shop, I decided to stop in and get something to eat.
I placed my order and sat down at a table, while I waited for one of the servers to bring me my food once it was done. It must have been open mic night, or something, because while I was waiting, two people had gone up and done a duet. After they finished, a short, stocky man went up to the microphone and spoke. “Thank you, Carly and Bill, for that lovely rendition of ’You’re the one that I want.’ Next up, is no stranger to Pete’s Pizza, please give it up for Miley!!” The crowd went nuts when they heard her name get called. Curious about what she
looked like, I turned and looked up, only to see the most beautiful woman in the entire world. “Hey ya’ll. Tonight, I’m gonna be singing something I just wrote this afternoon. It’s about people in relationships that aren’t healthy and they know they should get out of it, but they’re too scared to. They think that just because their world is already dark, there’s no chance of ever seeing happiness. And I’m here to tell ya’ll that I was just like you guys. I was with someone I thought I loved and that’s the only reason I stuck around, and put up with the abuse. But as soon as I got out of that relationship, things DID get better. So I’m here to tell you guys that the sun will rise.” She put her head down, and then the music started.
“I can see the weight there in your eyes
I can feel the thorn in your side
Your knuckles are bruised from a losing fight
One way down a dead end street
Broken glass underneath your feet
You think the day won't break the sunless night
The sun will rise
The sun will rise
When you've lost your lights
The sun will rise
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
I've been in stuck in a storm before
Felt the wind raging at my door
Couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't find a way out
Somehow my clouds disappeared
Somehow I made it here
Maybe just so you could hear me say
The sun will rise
The sun will rise (The sun will rise)
When you've lost your lights
The sun will rise
It'll be alright (It'll be alright)
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
And though you can't see it's
So hard to believe it
Sometimes you just need a little faith (All you need is a little faith)
There's an answer to your prayer
And I swear that there'll come a day, yeah
The sun will rise
The sun will rise (The sun will rise)
The sun will rise (The sun will rise)
The sun will rise
Yeah
The sun will rise
The sun will rise
The sun will rise
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
The sun will rise”
The music came to an end, and once again, she bowed her head, and everyone started cheering for her. I found myself joining in and cheering as well. Even though I knew nothing about her, after hearing that song, it was like we had been best friends for years. I had to talk to her! The shop was coming to a close and Miley was packing up her things, it was the perfect opportunity. “Um.. Miley?” She looked up at me and I almost fell over. She had
the most gorgeous blue eyes I had ever seen in my entire life. “That would be me.” She smiled, and then let out a slight chuckle. I extended my hand towards her. “I’m Joe and I just wanted to tell you how amazing that song was. I’m in a relationship right now and it isn’t healthy, but I’m too scared to get out of it because even though I know it’s unhealthy, I don’t want to be alone.” Miley looked at me, then down to my hand, which was still extended, and then back up at me. She tightly wrapped her arms around me, and I instantly felt safe. “Joe, I know it’s hard and you don’t want to leave, but it’s for your own safety. You might love her and not want to leave her, but I can guarantee you that you’re going to find another woman you love who will make you even more happy and not
put you through any of the abuse that your current girlfriend is. You have to do what’s right for you.” After that, she released her grip and pulled out a notepad from her purse. She scribbled something down on it and then tore out a sheet. “Here’s my number. I’m here if you need to talk.” She walked away, leaving me to do some serious thinking.
I woke up the next day and knew it was time. I walked outside to my car and picked up my phone. Here it goes, I’m not going to hold anything back anymore. “Joe? What do you want? I’ve told you not to call me. If I want to
talk to you, I’ll make the phone call.” Meghan’s voice sounded very disgusted to be hearing from me and I could tell she wanted to hang up. “NO! Listen here, Meghan. I’m sick of being put through all your crap and being treated the way that you treat me. I’m coming over and we’re going to have a talk.” I ended the phone call right away so she wouldn’t have time to argue. This was going to be taken care of…right now.
My nerves were getting the best of me as I got closer to Meghan’s door, but there was no backing out now. I brought my hand, which was very sweaty, to the door and knocked. Moments later, there were footsteps and the door opened. The only problem was, it wasn’t Meghan who opened it. It was… “Liam!?” I questioned. He nodded his head and looked down at me. “Yeah. What the hell are you doing here? Meghan and I are in the middle of something…” He trailed off. Right away, I knew what he was referring to. “Alright. Can you give her a message for me?” Liam looked at me confused and scratched the back of his neck. “Yeah, I guess so. What’s up?” “Can you tell her that she’s a violent woman who needs to work on how to control her anger. Just because she take her anger out on someone physically, doesn’t mean she needs to. And she should really get professional help before she loses everyone she cares about.” I turned around and was about to walk away into the cloudy and foggy day that was in front of me when I heard Meghan’s voice calling after me. “WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING?!?!” I turned around and looked her straight in the eyes, “As far away from you as I can get. I’m sick of being treated the way that you treat me. I’m sick of the abuse. And I’m sick of you. We’re done.” I turned around and walked away, feeling 100 pounds lighter than I ever did before. On my walk to my car, I reached into my
pocket and fished out my phone and the small piece of paper. I punched some numbers into my keypad, using the paper as a reference and waited while it rang. “Hello?” “Hey Miley, it’s Joe.” “Hey Joe. How are you doing?” Her voice sounded upbeat and I felt butterflies. “I’m doing great actually.” “I’m glad to hear that.” It seemed like she was smiling which made me smile. “Yeah, it is. Listen, I was calling because I wanted to know if you were interested in hanging out right now?” When there was no answer on the other line, I felt like an idiot.
She obviously didn’t want to go out with me. Why was I wasting my time? “I’d love to. I’ll be ready in like 20 minutes and I’ll text you my address.” Success! “Sounds great. I’ll see you soon.” “See ya!” We both hung up and I got in my car. As she promised, I got a text from Miley with an address on it and I headed in the direction of her house. But as I was driving, the craziest thing happened, the cloudy, foggy sky had cleared up and was now bright and sunny. I guess Miley was right, the sun will rise. You just have to push out the darkness.
